Tai Chi & Qigong

08/28/2008
This class is a combination of Qigong and Tai Chi, focused movements for mediation and healing. The Tai Chi style being taught is Yang-Wu short form, a series of slow, continuous, gentle and flowing movements of the body, with a calm, focused, and centered state of mind.

Qigong (or ch'i kung) refers to a wide variety of practices that involve movement and breathing. The 'qi' (chi) in 'qigong' means breath, 'life force', 'energy'. 'Gong' means work applied to a discipline or the resultant level of skill, so 'qigong' is thus 'breath work' or 'energy work'.

Tai Chi refers to a form of traditional Chinese mind/body exercise and meditation that uses slow sets of body movements and controlled breathing. Tai chi is done to improve balance, flexibility, muscle strength, and overall health. "Tai" meaning supreme, "chi" meaning energy, 'life force'.

This class is appropriate for everyone.

Yin Yang Yoga

08/28/2008
Inspired by gentleness, precision and letting go, this practice draws together different elements of yoga: softness combined with strength, inner and outer balance, and stillness flowing into movement.

The yin style of long-held passive poses opens the body over sustained periods of time, encouraging softness and deep internal release and allowing chi to flow through the subtle channels while also promoting a more contemplative, non-reactive quality of mind.

The yang style is much more about dynamic movement that focuses on strength and building inner heat. But within yin there is yang and within yang there is yin – by bringing these elements into harmony we can lead more balanced lives on and off the mat. This class is perfect for the beginner or the seasoned practitioner.

Hatha Flow

08/28/2008
Building upon our Hatha Yoga class, Hatha Flow integrates individual postures into flowing movements coordinated with the breath.   All students are encouraged to move at comfortable pace.  We recommend that students be comfortable with the basic Sun Salutation sequence for this class.  In addition, students should be familiar with basic yogic breathing techniques, such as Dirga and Ujjayi pranayama.
